The month of October marked a slight decline in the motorcycle sales market

Slowdown in the two-wheeler market caused by the second semi-lockdown.

After the summer months and a positive September, the month of October recorded a slowdown in the two-wheeler market with a -11.6% compared to the same month of 2019. What is the cause of this trend reversal? In fact, mopeds continued to increase (+ 17% equal to 1806 vehicles sold) together with motorcycles (+ 1.72% equal to 6488 vehicles). The scooter market caused the decline with a -22.29% (9260 units). “Despite the decline in the scooter segment, mopeds and motorcycles are still holding, a sign that in this year, however very difficult, passion and demand for usable, distant and sustainable mobility remain decisive factors of choice for a market that, has proved to be vital and driving force for the country, despite the absence of aid and incentive measures“. Thus comments the president of ANCMA (National Association of Cycle Motorcycles and Accessories), Paolo Magri, observing the sales figures for October.

The slowdown is attributable to Covid second wave and the consequent spread of teleworking, which has reduced the need to move, especially in urban areas. But to these reasons are also added economic uncertainty and, more marginally, the arrival of winter with colder temperatures that have always discouraged traveling on two wheels.
Many are also waiting for the new models whose release is scheduled for the end of the year / beginning of 2021.

On the other hand, the electric motorbike market is constantly growing, supported by the Italian state incentives: in October, zero-emission scooters, mopeds and motorbikes grew by 115.2%. Among the best-selling models is the Benelli TRK 502 (318 new registrations), followed closely by the Honda Africa Twin (269).
